About the role:

This is an exciting opportunity to join the ITS Division at the University of Sussex and become an essential part of a team driving the University’s most exciting and impactful initiatives. If you are a committed Senior Developer with a passion for data warehousing, business intelligence and reporting, this role is for you. You will spearhead the BI development team and look after all technical aspects of Business Intelligence and reporting across projects and the supporting BAU functions. You will work closely with a technical team of Architects, Developers, and Test analysts to drive delivery while engaging with stakeholders at all levels across the University. Key Responsibilities:

Team Leadership:

  • Lead the BI Development Team.
  • Coordinate tasks and activities among team members to ensure alignment with milestones.

Data Modelling:

  • Support the Data Architect with the design and implementation of the data architecture. 
  • Develop data models that support efficient data storage, retrieval, and reporting.
  • Ensure data models align with the overall architecture.

ETL Processes:

  • Design, develop, and optimize ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) processes to ensure accurate and efficient data integration.
  • Implement best practices for ETL processes to ensure data quality and consistency.
  • Monitor and troubleshoot ETL processes to ensure timely data availability.

Database Management:

Manage and optimise the data warehouse environment, ensuring high performance and reliability.
Implement database security measures to protect sensitive information.

Reporting and Analytics:

Develop and implement reporting solutions to meet the needs of various stakeholders, including faculty, staff, and administrators.
Create and maintain dashboards and analytical tools that provide data insights. 
Ensure reports are accurate, timely, and meet the needs of end-users.

Collaboration and Stakeholder Engagement:

Work closely with project managers, business analysts, and other stakeholders to gather and understand reporting requirements.
Engage with end-users to gather feedback and refine reporting solutions.
Communicate progress, issues, and solutions to stakeholders effectively.

Quality Assurance:

Implement data validation and verification processes to ensure data accuracy and integrity.
Conduct regular reviews and testing of data warehousing and reporting solutions.
Address any data quality issues promptly and efficiently.

Documentation and Training:

Document data models, ETL processes, and reporting solutions.
Provide training and support to end-users on how to use reporting tools and interpret data.
Maintain up-to-date documentation for all data warehousing and reporting activities.

Innovation and Improvement:

Stay current with industry trends and best practices in data warehousing and reporting.
Identify and implement opportunities for process improvement and innovation.
Lead initiatives to enhance the data warehousing and reporting capabilities of the University. 

Mentorship and Team Development:

Mentor junior developers and team members, providing guidance and support.
Foster a collaborative and productive team environment.
Encourage continuous learning and professional development within the team.

About you:

To be successful in this role you will be able to demonstrate a great level of experience in and understanding of data warehousing, business intelligence and reporting. You will combine an analytical approach with great attention to detail. You will have a strong delivery focus and thrive when working to challenging deadlines, whilst remaining adaptable and be eager to learn and improve your skills. You will be able to articulate technical issues clearly to business stakeholders, offering solutions and making recommendations.

Data Warehousing:

  • Extensive experience in designing, implementing, and managing data warehouses.
  • Proficiency in data warehousing concepts, architectures, and methodologies.

ETL Processes:

  • Strong experience with ETL tools and technologies.
  • Ability to design, develop, and optimise ETL processes for large-scale data integration.
  • Knowledge of integration patterns/practices and API management

Database Management:

  • In-depth knowledge of database management systems (e.g., Oracle, SQL Server, MySQL).
  • Experience with database performance tuning, optimisation, and maintenance.

Data Modelling:

  • Expertise in data modelling techniques, including conceptual, logical, and physical data models.
  • Ability to design data models that support efficient data storage and retrieval.

Reporting and Analytics:

  • Proficiency with reporting tools and technologies (e.g. IBM Cognos, Power BI).
  • Experience in developing dashboards, reports, and analytical solutions.

Communication Skills:

Ability to explain technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.

Attention to Detail:

  • High level of attention to detail to ensure data accuracy and completeness.
