Job Description

You'll be joining the technology area of Kaluza Flex. With increasing volatility in energy prices, the need for a distributed intelligent zero carbon electricity grid has never been greater. We are is bridging the gap between distributed renewable generation such as wind turbines and solar panels and smart devices like electric vehicles to optimise their charging to the times where low cost, renewable generation is at its highest. By dynamically matching consumption with generation we're bringing lower cost, lower carbon energy to end consumers while also balancing the grid. You'll be working with energy IoT, electric vehicles, real-time distributed systems and machine learning algorithms to build the intelligent zero carbon grid of the future.

We're a small team of data-led and product focused Software Engineers, Production Engineers and Data Scientists within the Company , pushing the boundaries of energy IoT to bring the intelligent zero carbon grid of the future to life. As a collective we strive for engineering greatness and ensuring best practices across the board of the engineering community.

What will I be doing?

You'll be developing optimisation and ML algorithms as part of the flexibility platform. You'll be working on some cutting edge problems such as control of EV, batteries, heat pumps and other devices charging and optimal energy trading of flexibility

We have a matrixed approach, so you will spend most of your day-to-day being part of a close-knit agile team with several engineers, a product manager and a software engineering manager. You will also be part of the centralized data science & analytics team, sharing best practices and providing a like-minded community.

Key responsibilities Include:

  • Contribute to extending our Products: We have a lot of data from connected flexible devices (such as Batteries, Air Conditioners, Electric Vehicles etc.) and need to control those devices to meet customer needs, balance the grid and develop novel customer propositions for energy retailers. Getting all this together comes through algorithms.
  • Creating ML/optimisation algorithms: mainly coding in Golang and Python using data technologies including BigQuery, kafka and the GCP cloud environment. We are using packaged services which makes it very easy to deploy new features dynamically. We have to solve various problems related to control theory, time series forecasting, anomaly detection etc.
  • Productise algorithms: getting algorithms into the wild, so they can be tested with customers and improved. Automate, monitor and maintain data science products by following best practice in your use of tooling, alerting and version control (Git).
  • Sharing your experiences and feeding back on other data scientists: we're building a data science community and this role will stimulate a culture of collaboration, openness, and innovation.
  • Identifying potential opportunities: Contribute to finding new places that data science could bring value to our products, ensuring the right questions are being asked and identifying where data science can have the biggest impact - and assessing potential risks.

Is this the job for me? It could be if some of these apply

  • You genuinely want to be in the front-line of the climate change battle.
  • You have experience productionising algorithms - across the full data science lifecycle
  • You are a "type-B" data scientist - a builder, engineer & coder - especially using Python
  • You have a solid understanding of statistics, algorithmics, optimisation and modeling techniques
  • You like communicating your knowledge with others - tailoring your approach to the technicality of the audience
  • You are very practical and know when to use the right level of complexity in order to solve actual product problems.
  • You know about working in an agile development environment that employs continuous integration and continuous delivery best practices, and have experience of pair programming, CI/CD and deployment strategies
