Job Description

As part of an interdisciplinary team, the mechanical engineer will be involved in the full life cycle design, development and manufacture of Itero’s novel technology with the aid of CAD and CAE tools. This critical role in our engineering team focuses on finalising Itero’s core pyrolysis and ancillary technologies and supporting these systems through the manufacturing, installation and commissioning phases.

We are looking for a mechanical engineer who can quickly integrate themselves into the team and enhance the detailed design and design for the manufacture of Itero’s technologies. You will have a proactive and hands-on approach to problem-solving, the ability to work independently and collaborate with a team. The successful applicant should have experience in successfully taking mechanical designs through manufacturing processes, within budget and on schedule.

The role will be flexibly based between Itero’s Central London office, our West London Pilot Plant (in Iver), and home as required. The mechanical engineer role includes occasional travel to UK/EU manufacturing sites and our upcoming Demonstration Plant in the Netherlands (near Maastricht) as needed.

About Itero

This is an exciting opportunity to join a clean technology company helping to build a circular economy for plastics. Our proprietary technology is a process for chemical recycling, a growing and innovative part of the recycling and plastics industries. Chemical recycling, sometimes also called advanced recycling, converts otherwise non-recyclable plastic waste into valuable petrochemical resources to produce new plastic products. Alongside our UK R&D pilot plant near Heathrow, we are developing our Demonstration Plant in the Netherlands, which will be capable of processing up to 27,000 tonnes per year of mixed plastic waste.

Our cleantech solutions are powered by a group of ambitious and innovative thinkers, with a shared passion for tackling the most pressing environmental issues. This is a unique opportunity to join a fast-growing team in a fast-growing industry. This role would suit a self-starter with a passion for clean technology and the circular economy, who wants to have a central role in shaping Itero’s direction and growth.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Complete detailed design and resolve any existing mechanical design items of Itero’s technology, making use of relevant tools including CAD to review the suitability of these systems for manufacturing and installation.
  • Working internally and with suppliers, third-party design engineers, manufacturers, and our EPC partner to deliver the Itero technology through to an installed and commissioned state at our Netherlands Demonstration Plant.
  • Continuation of any design tasks with third parties during the detailed design and manufacture of the technology.
  • Once the Demonstration Plant is commissioned, support for the production engineering function to overcome day-to-day product changes and quality issues.
  • General engineering administrative tasks and development of scope of work for third-party engineering consultants.
  • Source suitable materials and components for bespoke product development.
  • Help identify areas of improvement, new systems, processes, and suppliers to drive quality, and efficiency, and to save costs.
  • Stay current with product specifications, engineering technology and production processes.
  • Support for all mechanical design functions of our UK R&D facility.

Mechanical Engineer Desirable Experience:

A broad range of engineering and design processes
Full life cycle design of a product or system, specifically manufacturing, installation and commissioning
Heavy engineering
Design of high-temperature systems
Design of systems operating within explosive atmospheres
CAD (we use Solidworks but other packages are also relevant)
Engineering simulation (FEA, CFD, Matlab/Octave) or a willingness to learn
Relevant Science or Engineering degree
4+ years of professional engineering experience

Personal Qualities:

  • Good time management and organisational skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to work with colleagues at all levels of seniority
  • A can-do attitude – willing to push yourself out of your comfort zone
  • Willingness to learn and open to evolving responsibilities
  • Confidence in challenging the status quo and putting forward fresh ideas
  • Open to learning new skills and capabilities if they don’t exist already within Itero

Key Benefits:

  • Circa £60,000 dependent on experience
  • 25 days holiday (not including public holidays)
  • Health insurance
  • Flexible working (including working from home)
  • Yearly personal development budget
  • Fun & dog-friendly Central London office (current location includes gym and bar)
  • Cycle to work scheme
  • Potential for international travel

We recognise the importance of a good balance between work and home life and we do everything we can to accommodate flexible working, including working from home and compressed or part-time hours.

Our Company Culture (Who we are)

As we are committed to creating the best possible engineering processes, we are also committed to building a great workplace. We strive to foster an environment of trust and opportunity, where ambitious people can take pride in their work as individuals and as a team and are supported to grow.

We want to support our team in both their personal and professional lives and understand this means different things for different individuals. With Itero, you’ll have high exposure to other parts of the business, you won’t be boxed into a particular position or level, and we’ll invest in your career development.
